A Primer on Materials
In today's discussion we'll tackle the topic of materials and technology. We'll loook at a brief survey of materials and provide a brief synopisis of materials that are of particular interest to us.
Materials underpin our very existence on earth as human beings. The earth's core is made of molten rock which is a material and the result of many years of geological processes which have allowed the formation of our home planet earth.
Types of Materials
There are two broad classes of general classes of materials:
- Natural Materials
- Synthetic Materials
Natural Materials are further divided into:
- Inorganic Materials-Which include rocks, minerals, gemstones bone, sand, clays
- Organic Materials-which include wood, leather, sugars, proteins
Synthetic Materials are further divided into:
- Inorganic Materials-which include ceramics, glasses, alloys
- Organic Materials-which include Polymers such as thermosets, thermoplastics , elastomers, composites etc.,
